Traveling to India – and why it deserve the word “Incredible” – Part 3

August 5, 2018

One weekend, a good friend of mine took me for a weekend trip to see these amazing places and temples like no other.  It’s a long drive to Hassan from Bangaore and so this needs to be done in the weekend.

If you are in India, DO NOT MISS OUT seeing their temples and palaces.  You will always find it amazing and mesmerizing.  Eventhough they look almost the same, you can’t help but wonder about the history of them all.

Our first stop is the Shravanabelagola.  You have no idea how many times I have to memorize this name without stuttering, but I did.  And I say it with precision now even when I am sharing this experience.  This place is huge!  Just like the main pilgrimage where you will see the largest monolith statue in the world, one can already bask into the wonderul surroundings.  Before reaching the monolith though, you will have to climb these stairs….with your bare feet!

394484_10150611932625421_179037469_n
395667_10150612048165421_412417682_n
400355_10150612045070421_864643473_n

It was sunny that day but the weather is cool.  I only needed the shawl to protect me from the heat.  Since this is a pilgrimage, you have not choice but to take off your shoes out of respect.  Don’t worry, you won’t burn your feet.

Upon reaching the top, there are beautiful carvings you will come across along the way until you meet the Gommateshwara statue.

396757_10150611935045421_194189578_n

So, to manage your expectation, there are few people at the pilgrimage.  It only gets too busy when there is a festival for the Jain god.  We went there without the mentioned festival so the place is quiet and mostly appreciable.

So, this is what I was talking about earlier.

395843_10150611947990421_1490104861_n

There are other interesting parts of the pilgrimage.  The place is quiet and peaceful.  You can distinguish the people based on their purpose….to visit and pray, or to visit and take memories.  I am on the latter part.

You can also rest there for a bit as you have to go down the stairs you saw at the top of the post.  Before you go down though, enjoy this view!

That’s it for the first stop.

Hoysaleshvara Temple – In Halebidu, found this magnificent ancient temple.  Again, not many tourist are here so basically the photo opportunity is big.  But more than that is the appreciation of the carvings from walls to ceilings to entrance to the pillars.

395906_10150618451500421_1121253211_n

In one of the spot there, you can find the Nandi statue made up of soapstone as well as the entire temple where the Nandis are guarding.

There are parts of the temple that has been in ruins already.  It has been sacked many years ago and most of the areas needs preservation.

Look closely at this frieze.  Though this isn’t the only memory I took from the temple…lol

Chennakeshava Temple – in Belur is another sight to see.  Just like Hoysaleshvara, some of the parts of the temple needs preservation.  Every temples we went to has rich history in it and one could only imagine how each of these temples were built by hands as they are already in existence centuries ago.

As we have exploring all 3 sites in bare feet, at this moment, I still don’t feel callous.  The concrete are cold and even if you have to explore bare feet, it’s as if you were just walking around your living room.

The carvings on this temple is equally impressive as the last one.

Some interesting sights at the site.

Onec you get to see the carvings in the walls, the details of it, one is bound to be amazed. Unbelievable hardwork and dedication to make the intricate details of it.

Of all the temples I visited in India, these ones are so far the best.

The drive back to Bangalore is long but full of memories.  With all the things I saw and understood from this place in Karanataka, I am more than greatful for the opportunity to know and learn its lessons.  Thank you Pradeep Jain for taking me here.

Traveling to India – and why it deserve the word “Incredible” – Part 1

August 5, 2018

I went to India for a 3 months work assignment.  This is my first out of the country travel so I really prepared for it.  I had to undergo cultural training and briefing, vaccines, medical exams etc to ensure that I am able to adapt to the change smoothly.

There is no direct flight from Manila to India.  Originating from Manila, one should either make a transfer flight in Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand and then head out to any state in India.  For this trip, my base is Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka State.  India is a Republic so they call their provinces as State.  Filipinos going to India requires a visa before we can enter the country.  Visa application is via online.  Check more details at Indian Embassy in Manila.

Arriving in Bangalore via Singapore Airlines at Kempegowda International Airport, the airport is 35km (45minutes drive) to Bangalore.  Quite far so better book your transport in advance.  My good friend came to fetch me when I arrived, as we would always do as well for our visitors in our country.

photo from Kempegowda International Airport website

My temporary home is called Tristar Apartments located at Indiranagar, a posh area lined with other hotels and Restaurants/Cafes.  This place is clean and spacious.  All equipped with kitchen needs, very nice comfort room and dressers are lighted.  The apartment also has gym, reception area with books and they serve international breakfast.

My first day at work was rather heart pounding as I have to take the commute to office.  I also don’t have my badge registered yet to the reception so I have to walk from the main guardhouse to my building at RMZ Infinity, home of Thomson Reuters as well as other big companies in the area.  The meet and greet was rather cheerful and exciting as I finally have to put a face to the names.

Me being in Bangalore is because I won the proposal for a potential project to be implemented cross-location.  A program called Team Leader Exchange was launched to which eligible managers can apply for.  I was lucky to have won the proposal in exchange with my colleague who was also assigned in Manila.  While we are on exchange, we will also be handling the teams that we left in the location.

And so, my Bangalore adventure begins…. read the part 2 here.

Churreria La Lola – SM Aura

August 5, 2018

It’s the weekend and we had everything planned out from lunch to dinner to chill. And SM Aura is the place where most of he Booky promos are on and we did not let the chance go by to avail some of the B1T1.

First tried churros when I was offered one but haven’t had the chance to try it again. The promo is buy 1 box with 6 pcs and get the same for only Php110. Though the dip is not included, it’s just a mere Php60 only and you get to choose from their 4 variants.

I ordered the Ube dip. And for 12 pcs of churros, it’s enough. Unless you are a monster when it comes to dipping!

38513910_374763076390751_1740581109256683520_n

Katzikat Recommends: Every once in a while, it’s good to have a snack like this. Just be mmindful of the dip as it can be sinful as it is already. 🙂
This snack bar does not have any place to hang out…just a place to wait for your order. So most of the time, people orders churros here and leave.

Definitely Dubai!

August 1, 2018

We visited Dubai in August 2015 and it was the hottest month of the year. Our generous host for this time-off was my sister and her Family who has been in Dubai for less that 10 years and no amount of thank you’s can express how they made our stay the most memorable of all our travels.

Unlike it’s neighboring countries like Qatar or Kuwait, Dubai is an open city.  Vast and Vibrant city, so many to discover.  Progress is evident in all the construction sites.  Not to mention the fact that Dubai houses the tallest building in the world – Burj Khalifa.  But these are not the only “est” we can find in Dubai.

For this article, I am going to share the places we visited rather that our activities each day as we stayed there for almost a month which would render this content insanely long!

1. Visiting the Tallest Building in the World – Burj Khalifa

From our homebase in Arabian Ranches, it will take use around 15 minutes drive from the house to the city center.  Even before you reach the center, you can already view the towering splendour of the Burj Khalifa.  It is indeed distinct and one-of-a-kind structure among Dubai’s skyscraper.  The signature pointed tower makes it even more seemingly unreachable.

You can visit the observation deck at 125th floor.  And if you do, don’t forget to spot the island the resembles the world map from one of their telescope. 🙂

Fact or Fiction?:  The person occupying the highest residential floor in Burj Khalifa is an Indian National.

2.  A glimpse of the luxurious hotel designed like a sail – Burj Al Arab

I haven’t actually visited the hotel itself but that’s fine.  If I can only view from afar is good enough already.  My family went to the beach near the Burj and had a pre-dusk dip at the hot sea.  Don’t worry about the heat from the sand, you’ll get used to it in a while.  Along with our snacks and bathing suits, dipping in Dubai sea is one of a kind experience.

Fact or Fiction?:  Burj Al Arab is the only 7-star hotel in the world.

3.  A replica of an old Arabian Town – Madinat Jumeirah

My sister took us to this amazing resort where everything is pleasing to the eye.  It could have been cool to hang out outside as the resorts houses different restaurants that had al-fresco dining but that isn’t a good idea as the heat is sometimes un-tolerable.  The resort also has a souk (market) inside which you can browse thru while walking.  Bring the kids as there is plenty of room for them to roam around without worrying about them breaking things.  Just keep an eye on them though as the place is huge and they might get lost roaming around.

Fact or Fiction?:  As the resort is surrounded with waterways, Madinat Jumeirah was actually called the Venice of Middle East.

4.  A Marina like no other – Dubai Marina

This is the only Marina I’ve seen where there are more buildings rather than actual bodies of water.  Or perhaps, I was only on one side of the place most of the time.  The structure overpowers the beauty of the man-made bodies of water.  It also houses the most well-known hotel brands in the world.  Including the yatchs in the waterfront, is now a testatment of how rich the people who lives in one of those buildings are.

When we come here, we usually go crazy over the fountains.  They actually allow you to get wet as the heat is scorching.  And before sunrise, plan for a morning jog around the marina where there are few people roaming around this famous attraction.

Fact or Fiction?:  Dubai Marina is entirely man-made

5.  Go extreme and let your heart race – Skydive Dubai

One morning while we were jogging around the Marina, we came accross the Skydive Dubai area.  It is a heart racing experience to be 13,000 feet up in the air and dropping towards gravity.  I did not try it though.

Fact or Fiction?:  Name a Filipino celebrity who already tried this extreme ride in Dubai.

IMG_4645

6. Go crazy shopping at the world’s largest mall – Dubai Mall

The mall is just within the area of Burj Khalifa, there is nothing more luxurious mall that I have ever been to.  So many shops, restaurants, brands.  Intricate details on the ceilings, walls, corners.  All you can do beside shopping is get impressed with the structure.

We came here several times.  And for each time, we are in awe and unable to visit everything the mall can offer.

Fact or Fiction?:  Dubai Mall is houses the largest cinema in the world.

7.  The home of the Ski Dubai – Mall of Emirates

One of the top 5 shopping malls in Dubai, MOE as famously called is a place for family leisure, shopping and chill.  It houses the first indoor ski resort and snow park in Dubai.  Though my sister only comes here to do some groceries, we managed to chill at those times while killing time.

8.  Transportation made easier with Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro opened in 2009 and when we visited it in 2015, it looks like everything is still brand new.  We rarely use the metro since my sister usually drives us around whenever we wanted to visit places in the city.  Riding the metro is something that shouldn’t be missed though.  It’s convenient, fast and watch out for the Gold Card section as there are distinctions on your card access.  When we took the metro ride, my sister also made us ride the bus towards the nearest station from our place.  This is also the first time my niece is taking the bus.

IMG_4338
IMG_4341

Fact or Fiction?:  Dubai Metro is the world’s longest automated driverless train system.

9.  Children trying to be adult at Kidzania Dubai

Courtesy of my sister, this is my son’s first time at Kidzania.  It’s my first time too!  At first, I really have no idea what to do here.  For every kid entering, requires the supervision of adults.  This attraction is actually a child’s role play.  They get to do adult jobs in exchange for money where they are also allowed to have a good time after a day’s work.  When I say good time, not the good time like adults do but of course, more play.  Kidzania Dubai is where my son got his Pazzport and so far, we have visited Dubai and Manila’s Kidzania branches.

Fact or Fiction?: Kidzania Dubai is the 7th franchise that opened starting from it’s home location in Mexico.

10.  The myth came to life – Atlantis, The Palm

Atlantis, The Palm is a resort built in one of the highest point in the famous The Palm Jumeirah – the structure that is shaped like a palm tree in the coastline of Dubai.  Upon entering the Palm, one can only be left in amazement of how the structure came about from reclaimed area.  Smell and feel extravagant upon stepping into this fine place.

Atlantis is just one of the attractions inside the entire resort.  We are unable to enter in one of the 16 fronds as these are private properties and only residents are allowed.

Fact or Fiction?:  David and Victoria Beckham owns a villa in one of the fronds at The Palm Jumeirah

11.  Watch the life underwater – Dubai Aquarium

My sister treated us to see the Dubai Aquarium as both my son and my niece loves fishes and anything that moves from the water.  This is also the first time my son experiences VR by watching creatures from the sea.  From the VR goggles, we went on to see other creatures of the sea from the magnificent tanks of the aquarium.

Fact of Fiction?:  Dubai Aquarium is the largest Indoor Aquarium in the world.

12.  Home of Dubai’s racetrack – Meydan

Though we only came here to eat buffet lunch, be mindful that this place requires a dress code.  Strictly!  If you are in the location underdressed, you will feel ashame you did not bring out those high heels and fabulous dress from your closet.

13.  Another paradise for kids – Modhesh World

So this trip is not only about the adults but mostly for the kids.  My sister took us to this indoor entertainment complex for our kids to enjoy the day.  My son particularly enjoyed the trampoline

IMG_4554
IMG_4565

14.  Another luxurious residence at JBR

Just another beach to hang out to when in Dubai.  Water from this beach is of course humid and tolerable.  I vividly remember my sister cursing when we had to park the car in one of the residences and was charged AED60.  That’s even pricier than the dessert we had.

38218404_10156600801465421_8602000018422890496_n

Our time in Dubai is the best there is.  We get to spend time with our family like no other.  Definitely coming back to Dubai when we can.

Cafe Mary Grace – SM Aura

July 31, 2018

I am no first timer with Cafe Mary Grace. I have always admired how each of their cafes are well-decorated and the interiors are well-planned. The tables are also a comfort to sit on. And while you’re at in, you can check out the messages or appreciation right on your desk casted underneath a glass. Very personalised and heart-felt. You can almost feel how each of the diners we’re satisfied with their dining experience at the cafe.

The staff are courteous. They attend to you immediately and they even let you chose your own table. As we are selecting what to eat from their menu, the staff suggested us some very good choices.

First the Summer Squash soup. Very smooth and yummy soup that warms your stomach like you have never eaten squash before.

38124056_10156599870445421_2592491252557545472_n

For the main courses, we had the Sardine Pasta with Olives and of course the Dory & Saffron Cream Plate – completed with Salad, Fish , Meat and Dessert.

38026335_10156599870935421_7343031149892993024_n

I finished the pasta on my own. The Olives perfectly gave the saltiness of the sardine a hot kick that blends well with the pasta. Though I would have prefered the pasta to be a bit dry so as not to make the pasta soggy. I guess it’s just excess water from the mix.

Katzikat Recommends: If you are looking for a romantic and chill place to eat, this is the place. The restaurant is not actually in the prime location in SM Aura but it managed to make you feel like you are in a place of significance while dining.

Just Thai – BGC

July 31, 2018

It’s my second time eating at this restaurant but I haven’t had the chance to review it before as I am unable to capture the food. This time, another dinner with the boss and so I joined. It’s a walking distance from our office and it’s in the midst of Burgos Circle.

The place is quite small but the interior is well decorated for a cozy dining feel. We headed upstairs as we are 5 diners for the night. We were greeted by the attendant and handed us their menu. From the restaurant name itself, expect the food to be spicy. We are dining with our guest for the night who is a strict vegetarian.

You can’t eat at a thai restaurant without ordering their Pad Thai. We ordered for 3 types of Pad Thai – Vegetable pad thai (without mushroom, egg and fish sauce), Shrimp pad thai and Pork pad thai. (I only managed to take a pic of the shrimp one though).

38086044_10156599831435421_2686804898971910144_n

Tom Yum soup is also a favourite dish for thai food. The tang is just right but be careful when sipping as the spice tends to make you choke if swallowed too fast.

For the main course, we had the chicken curry and spicy pork chop. You may need rice when eating this dishes as they are spicy to the palate. Pardon the curry though as it was already ravaged when I took the pic.

I also ordered their Tamarind Iced Tea. Though it’s more on tamarind than the tea, surprisingly that it wasn’t that sour and the melting ice is just making the drink so good.

And for dessert, though I wouldn’t say this is a dessert as this is a rice cake which is going to be heavy after meals. The boss liked it. Not only that it is arranged beautifully but the balance of the coconut milk with the tasteless rice cake and the hit of tang in the mango makes this dessert a bestseller.

Katzikat Recommends: Eat here! You will never go wrong with their pad thais.

Manam – Greenbelt 2

July 23, 2018

I am meeting up with friends and since we are all over Metro Manila and Makati is the only place where we can meet halfway, Greenbelt is the place!

When I got there, my friends are already looking at the menu and these are our selections!

I understand now why this restaurant always has a lot of dining customers.  The sisig alone is to die for.  Though you may seem odd to see Kare-kare and Sinigang in 1 order, you’ll just have to take your food one viand at a time.  The Pinakbet is also a carbo-loading inducer haha.

We dined at their al-fresco area where there’s a band nearby.  The ambiance is just perfect to chill out with friends.

Jin Joo Korean Grill – Libis

July 21, 2018

Eversince our food adventure in one of the K restos in Morato, I started to spot other ones and bookmarking them for the future. One of them of course is this restaurant in Libis (although originally I wanted to visit their SM Aura branch). And so we parked, walked and reached the restaurant to find it all jampacked with diners.

We are 2nd in the list but we waited for our turn patiently. I had a booking reservation from Eatigo by 9:30pm for 30% off (but since I can only book 2 pax for that time, i took it but when I told the reception that we are 2 adults with 2 kids, they said that only the 2 adults will be given discount. Fine!).

37425273_10156575340555421_5537723637945073664_n

When I saw some people leaving already and some tables are just waiting to be cleared, still we are not yet called to have our table. You see, when you are waiting, you tend to observe the staff about how they work, how fast they can assist the diners etc. What’s so annoying is that, nobody is clearing the tables so other diners can have turn already. Until I spoke up and that’s the only time we are invited inside the restaurant.

The table is still a bit greasy when we sat down. We ordered for their 8 Flavours meat (which is presentably neat in their menu). The order already consists of their side dishes.

37565566_10156575340600421_3071912995538862080_n

Things I didn’t enjoy in this overrated restaurant:
1. Annoying attitude of the waiter/reception who told us no discount for other pax etc
2. 30minutes past my reservation and still cannot be accomodated until I starte to follow-up
3. Greasy Table
4. Minimal side dishes. Most of the side dishes are spicy. The kimchi, I can understand.
5. They ran out of LETTUCE!!!!!!!!! Since no lettuce combined with spicy food, we are compelled to order rice just to pacify the heat!
6. Exhaust is not adequate to suck up all the smoke inside
7. The staff (could be that they are undertaffed that day) are few to accomodate that big crowd. (and there is this one waiter who keeps on showing off with just 1 particular table by staying put in their table. What a joke)!

Katzikat thoughts: That is a long list of red flag for me. I cannot get over the lettuce part! The presentation of the 8 flavours meat is good, but I might be overshadowed by these lists of disappointments that my food suddenly became bland. I will never consider eating in this restaurant again. Though the restaurant is always full, that is if you can overlook my list, then you are good to dine!

Kaymig Seafood Grill

July 21, 2018

When craving for seafood, i always recommend 3 places: a. Buffet restaurant; b. Pricey seafood restaurant; c. dampa

Among the 3, Dampa (Seafood Macapagal) is never an odd-choice. This place, although you have to lower down your expectations on ambiance and location, can give you almost all the seafood craving you can ever imagine. When going to dampa, you have to be hands on. From market to picking the right restaurant, to selecting the cooking style, all the way to choosing your add-ons.

Our relative who is about to leave the country had to be taken to this place before flying out. Bond with his family over seafood, videoke, lots of drinks and the endless exchange of stories.

And for this round, our table is overflowing with food from the sea! with a veggie to pacify the umay.

Our menu for tonight:
1. Baked Mussels with cheese
2. Buttered Shrimp
3. Sinigang Shrimp
4. Buttered Lobster
5. Chili Crab
6. Steamed Crab
7. Ensaladang Talong
8. Seaweed Salad
9. Grilled Pampano
10. Calamares

Katzikat Recommends: This place is a good choice if you are a big group. You can rent the private room at a minimal fee. You will have your own Videoke machine, own table, and privacy.

Coffee Project – Taguig

July 7, 2018

The Vistamall in Taguig morphed into a cozy and accessible hang out for my son and I.  We’ve seen this cafe numerous times but never tried it until now.  It’s just wow!  Interior is well decorated, lighting is dim enough to have a good relaxing mood, tables are arranged in a way that you can still have privacy specially if you are working on some personal matters on your lappy as the corners are table-ready.

We ordered the bestseller Frappe – The Cookie Crumble. It was good tasting. Not too sweet. Whip cream is generous. I got my son a Strawberry and Melon Medley Fruit Frenzy. And he also liked it. They also have lots of pastries in the rack but we did try their Sardine Pasta. I was expecting salty, but surprisingly, it was a bit sweet too. Paired with a flat toasted bread, taste blends with my drink.

Katzikat Recommends: If you enjoy good and relaxing ambiance, this is the place to go. If you’re a first timer, ask your barista what is their bestseller and you can’t go wrong with it.

I remember when I was new to my practice, I can’t even lift or balance anything. And when introduced to the #kakasanapose I became obsessed into practicing it. Now, not only I can lift and balance myself, I can even create a #heart for it. #stronger #yogaposes #yogi
The softest flowers I’ve ever had. Meet my #Summer and #Winter. Because of them, I haven’t been working out for 2 days as they adjust to their new home. Now, I have 4 boys to take care of including MK and Kofi. #furmom #allboys #dogsofinstagram #stressreliever
The best years are yet to come....I always tell myself that. Not that I am living the worst, but I always look forward to better days. I don’t want to live a mediocre life...I want a life lived to the fullest. No matter how difficult it can be to achieve it. Leave the things that drags you down, be an inspiration to others. If one day, you can truly tell yourself, that you have reached your “est” and feel contented, that’s the time life is no longer difficult to live. Thank you, to all who greeted me and wished me a happy day on my journey close to 40. My life truly hasn’t began yet! My Bali vacation will be posted on my website www.readmypassion.com and see how amazing our days were in this beautiful island! #birthdaygift #balivacation #nusadua #closeto40 #celebratinglife
